    Description

1891 Springfield Football Team Cabinet Photograph with Naismith. Nineteenth century football cabinet is raised to the peak of desirability by the appearance of basketball inventor James Naismith (standing second from left). It was these early gridiron days that inspired Naismith to invent the first football helmet as well. Intriguingly, cradling a football at center is early football pioneer Amos Alonzo Stagg. Handwritten "1891 Springfield" at bottom is in Naismith's hand. Edge and surface wear evident, though nothing that materially affects image quality. Included in lot is 1936 softcover publication (112 pages) entitled "Springfield Football 1890 - 1936." that features a reprint of this image, identifying each man pictured. Edge and spine wear, loose from cover, otherwise EX.
