Description

1891 James Naismith's Personal Copy of Springfield College Cabinet Photograph. Exceptional mounted photo of Dr. Naismith's graduating class finds the inventor of basketball (seated, fourth from left) posing with gentlemen who participated in the very first game of basketball ever played. When one considers the value and importance assigned to nineteenth century baseball photography, an image such as this must be considered one of the most significant artifacts of early basketball history ever made available at public auction. The 8.5x13.5" photo, mounted on heavy cardboard, shows an expected degree of edge wear and minor loss of emulsion at left, but the central focus of the image is unaffected by these concerns and maintains brilliant focus and clarity. Vintage ink on verso identifying the image as "1891 Springfield Class" is is the hand of Dr. Naismith's daughter Hellen.
