Pete Maravich is the only deceased player absent!

1999 NBA Fifty Greatest Players Basketball Signed by Forty. Looking for an exciting project? This labor of love of our consignor, who began to seek out the hardcourt legends chosen as the Fifty Greatest in honor of the sport's centennial soon after the list was announced, reached an eighty percent completion rate before he put the brakes on the grueling odyssey. Thankfully, counted among the forty autographs he acquired in flawless black sharpie on this game model Official NBA leather basketball are all players who have passed since that list was announced, leaving the realistic goal of reaching a full forty-nine. Pete Maravich, of course, was the sole player no longer living in 1999, thus impossible from the start.

We've all seen the highly collectible lithographs, autographed by the living forty-nine, as they have surfaced on the public auction block at the rate of about one per year. Typically these prints have sold in the $40,000 neighborhood, with those deriving from the featured players' personal collections commanding varying premiums. But educated hobbyists are well aware that three-dimensional signed items have always surpassed their two-dimensional counterparts, with bats, balls and helmets outpacing photographs and team sheets by a wide margin. Clearly the argument that this most comprehensive of all known basketballs should follow that trend stands on solid footing. The addition of the final nine names, one suspects, would virtually guarantee it.

And so, your assignment, should you choose to accept it--track down the following: Barkley, Bing, Cunningham, Ewing, O'Neal, Pippen, Robinson, Stockton and Wilkins. Maravich, as we noted, is impossible, but our consignor has included a signed check from the Pistol, slabbed Gem Mint 10 by PSA.

The full roster of signers: Abdul-Jabbar, Archibald, Arizin, Barry, Baylor, Bird, Chamberlain, Cousy, Cowens, DeBusschere, Drexler, Erving, Frazier, Gervin, Greer, Havlicek, Hayes, Johnson, Jones, Jordan, Lucas, Karl Malone, Moses Malone, McHale, Mikan, Monroe, Olajuwon, Parish, Pettit, Reed, Robertson, Russell, Schayes, Sharman, Thomas, Thurmond, Unseld, Walton, West, Worthy.

Michael Jordan's signing was overseen by Upper Deck, and the ball is affixed with a UDA sticker with a matching cert included. A signing ticket for Isiah Thomas is here as well.

Every black sharpie signature remains as bold as the day of its application, and while forty autographs on a single ball makes for a tightly packed crowd, there's certainly room to complete the project if desired. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
