Description
1967-68 Pete Maravich 1,138th Point of Season Game Used Basketball. Perhaps the most inspiring piece from the unprecedented offering of Maravich artifacts housed within this Signature auction, the presented basketball is a living tribute to the historic father-son partnership that created the most exciting hardcourt superstar of the era. As the included letter of provenance from Pete's widow Jackie attests, "In the 1967-68 season, as a sophomore and first varsity year, 'Pistol' Pete Maravich led the nation with 1,138 points and a 43.8 per game average. My late husband, 'Pistol' Pete Maravich, was given this game ball. The ball was inscribed and signed by Pete 'I present this ball to you, Dad. Without your guidance and assistance this would have never been made possible, Pete.' It has been in the Maravich family since that day. I guarantee that it is 100% authentic and this letter will serve as your certificate of authenticity."It is well known that Press Maravich's almost obsessive drive to mold his son into an elite player dates to Pete's early childhood, and stories of his requirement that his son shoot 100 free throws in the family driveway before being allowed to go to bed begin any Pistol biography. Of course the partnership continued during Pete's LSU days, with father Press serving as varsity coach during the entirety of his son's service. The "Spalding Official Top-Flite 100" ball gifted to him by his grateful spawn is stamped with an identifying "LSU" and, prophetically, the logo of the "Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame," where Pete would be honored in two decade's time. The ball is boldly emblazoned with the historic "1138, '67 '68," beneath Pete's 8/10 inscription. The ball remains fully inflated and ideal for display, ready to serve as the focal point of any fine basketball collection. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Letter of provenance from Jackie Maravich.
