Only three graded higher!

1961 Fleer Jerry West Rookie #43 PSA Mint 9. It's difficult to know how much of Jerry West's enormous success was due to natural ability, and how much could be credited to his unbreakable will to win, since the latter was present in such tremendous supply that the natural balance was particularly skewed. Certainly West owned one of the prettiest (and most effective) jump shots in the game, but his peerless work ethic was the attribute that earned him the respect of teammates and opponents alike, and the sole distinction, in 1969, of being named the only NBA Finals MVP representing a losing team. Even in the midst of fellow legends from Elgin Baylor to Gail Goodrich to Wilt Chamberlain, it was West who commanded a leadership role on the court, whose penchant for last-second heroics earned him the nickname "Mr. Clutch."

The fourteen-time All-Star has earned every conceivable form of immortality in his sport, most notably in Springfield bronze and the silhouette used for the logo of the National Basketball Association, so his rookie card is an essential component of any serious collection. And this particular representation is virtually as good as it gets, outperformed by only three of nearly 1,500 examples submitted for PSA grading. Bold colors, silky gloss, sharp corners and solid centering pave the path to the upper reaches of the population report.
