    Description

    Only five finer!

1957 Topps Bill Russell #77 Rookie PSA NM-MT 8. If there was ever proof that Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach was ahead of his time, this was it. Historically, the center position had always been seen almost exclusively as an offensive weapon, but the legendary hardcourt general saw in the University of San Francisco All American an elite rebounder who could dominate the backcourt. Russell, Auerbach believed, was the missing piece in the Celtics' Championship puzzle. In a 1956 draft-day trade with the St. Louis Hawks, Auerbach claimed his prize, and added fellow future Hall of Famers K.C. Jones and Tommy Heinsohn to the roster as well. And thus the greatest dynasty in NBA history was begun.

Provided is the leading cardboard commemoration of that essential acquisition, heralding an era of utter dominance at Boston Garden. Russell's collection of World Championship rings more than doubles the population of examples that have been graded higher by the hobby's leading arbiter. The image area remains bright and glossy, fenced in by clean, white borders and corners as untouched as Russell's Championship tally. It's a relic celebrating its sixtieth birthday this year, but still as fresh as a new hatchling from the wax.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
