1957 Topps Bill Russell #77 PSA NM-MT 8. It goes without saying the Boston Celtics had high hopes for William Russell who was the second overall pick in the 1956 draft. But Boston fans never would have guessed the 6 ft. 9 in., West Monroe, LA born center would go on to lead the franchise to eleven NBA Championships during his thirteen year career. On paper, he was a great center, averaging just over fifteen points per game and over twenty-two rebounds per game earning him self twelve All-Star selections. While there were other centers in NBA history who were better statistically or who added more scoring to the mix but what cannot be argued is the fact that Russell is the winningest player in the history of the game. How can one not be in awe of a man who has more championship rings than he has fingers to wear them. Before his glory days in Boston, Russell led the University of San Francisco to two consecutive NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956 and was the captain of the U.S. National Basketball Team who took the gold in the 1956 Olympics. Pairing up with other greats like Bob Cousy, and later with John Havlicek, Russell was the heart and soul of the team, leading the charge into each amazing season. Playing at a position that often sees injuries and bad knees, Russell was amazingly consistent and healthy.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Of the over 650 examples submitted to PSA, there are forty-six in NM-MT with a handful rating higher. The card displays beautifully thanks to the deep, saturated hues and fresh gloss. The four sharp corners are all mint quality or very close to being mint. Each helps contain a clean and problem-free border. The lone element accounting for the grade is a slight shift in centering and print registration which is so common with this issue one wonders if that was their original intention. This is a must-have card for the basketball specialist.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
