1948 Bowman George Mikan #69 PSA NM 7. George Mikan was the first big man to dominate pro basketball. After starring at DePaul University, he turned pro in 1946 with the Chicago Gears of the National Basketball League, led the league in scoring and helped the Gears to the World Basketball Title. The next year he played for the Minneapolis Lakers of the Basketball Association of America and won the individual scoring title and the league title and duplicated both achievements the next season with the Lakers in the new NBA. At 6'10", Mikan towered over most opponents. His play led to landmark changes in pro rules. His knocking away opponent's downward shots led to a new rule against goaltending, and opponents stalling to stop his offense led to implementation of the shot-clock. Overall, his teams won seven professional championships, and he was named to the Basketball Hall of Fame.Graded PSA NM 7. This series is famous for their deep, rich colors and for portraits being less than perfectly centered. What we have here is a card with the commanding colors and centering that is as perfect as one will ever encounter with this series. The card depicts a fierce Mikan, glasses and all, driving to the hoop. The 1948 Bowman 72-card set was pro basketball's first, so technically each player's card is his rookie card. The higher numbers in the set (#37-72) came out later in the year and, because of diminishing later season sales, are rarer than the earlier numbers. Thus, Mikan's card #69 is a rare higher number and combined with his fame makes his card the decided pick of the 1948 Bowman litter.
