    Description

1897-98 Whitehead & Hoag Y.M.C.A. Omaha, Nebraska Basketball Champions Pin Back! To the best of our research, this is the oldest pinback related to basketball known. Late in 1891, James Naismith, a teacher at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts invented a new sort called "Basket Ball." He wrote, "The First Game: When Mr. Stubbins "brought" up the peach baskets to the gym I secured them on the inside of the railing of the gallery. This was about 10 feet from the floor, one at each end of the gymnasium." It seems it was me with a tepid response. That would change. From the earliest years of this new sport comes this extremely rare pin back from the "Omaha Find" of baseball player pins featuring the "Y.M.C.A. Basket Ball Team" from Omaha, Neb. "Champions '97 '98" The pin is a robust 1-3/4" diameter with a paper insert identifying it as a product of the Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, N. J.. Although the image has faded the pin is in overall close to near-mint condition with only very minor spot faults. For the basketball collector this is an extremely rare chance to acquire a collectible from the earliest years of the game where there is so very little known to have survived.
