    The "Air" apparent...

Signed 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie #57 BGS NM 7 Auto 9. For generations, it was Honus Wagner who enjoyed unchallenged supremacy within the trading card hierarchy, placed upon the throne by none other than Jefferson Burdick, the man who assigned the T206 nomenclature to the massive American Tobacco issue from which that card derived. As the decades rolled onwards, and tobacco gave way to bubble gum, Mickey Mantle's late-series appearance in the 1952 Topps issue began its challenge for the status of the hobby's most recognizable entry. But, today, it's safe to say that it is the Fleer rookie card of basketball's greatest figure that has claimed dominion as the most popular and beloved within the wide spectrum of the cardboard trade.

His Airness may or may not ever soar to the financial heights of his baseball brethren, but it's not exactly a fair fight, as the full population of his number fifty-seven card is far larger than those former record holders. But the cards that are raising the pricing record seemingly every month are not those dusty old rarities, but rather modern entries made scarce by limited production, or some unique quality absent from the standard issue. Certainly this offering qualifies as such.

Though Michael Jordan is a healthy man still short of his sixtieth birthday, he's effectively deceased when it comes to the autograph marketplace, particularly where the rookie card subgenre is concerned. It is likely that all of the Michael Jordan signed rookie cards that will ever exist already exist today, as it's well known that all requests to create more are destined for rejection.

As such, this is a relic of true rarity and importance, a fine Near Mint example of the hobby's most celebrated entry autographed in the boldest of blue sharpie. As more and more 21st century trading cards are soaring high into seven-figure territory, the ceiling for the rare few examples of this signed rookie Jordan would appear positively stratospheric.

Graded BGS NM 7 with subgrades: Centering 9, Edges 8.5, Corners 6.5, Surface 8.5. Beckett 9 Autograph.
