Description
2000 Upper Deck Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant (Game Jerseys Combo 2) #MJKB-A BGS NM-MT+ 8.5 Auto 10. Twenty years after this extraordinary trading card was produced, the two men it featured once again had the eyes of the sporting world upon them, for the most divergent of reasons. First came the heartbreaking news out of California, where a helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others slammed into a fog-shrouded mountain, leaving no survivors. Soon afterwards, as the global pandemic slammed the door on professional sports, "The Last Dance" documentary reinvigorated the sporting world's longstanding obsession with Michael Jordan, precipitating a pricing boom in the collectibles market that demonstrates no signs of slowing. As tears rolled down his cheeks at Bryant's funeral, Jordan spoke with great love for his "little brother," recounting the kind of stories that we heard from virtually everybody who knew the tireless seeker of excellence. "What Kobe Bryant was to me was the inspiration that someone truly cared about the way either I played the game or the way that he wanted to play the game. He wanted to be the best basketball player that he could be. And as I got to know him, I wanted to be the best big brother that I could be."
How fitting it seems now that they should share space upon one of the most important and desirable trading cards produced in the past quarter century, the absolute crown jewel of the 2000-01 UD Game Jersey Edition, the first issue in hobby history to offer dual-swatch auto cards. It is the single most desirable card one could pull from the issue based upon player combination and rarity, considered "The Godfather of Dual-Swatch Auto Cards." It's also the iconic pair's first joint signing of any trading card.
As if this elite rarity required any more fuel for its white-hot flames, we can report that just two examples of this card appear within the Beckett population, with this being the superior example at NM-MT+ 8.5. The perfect 10 autograph rating, of course, requires no comparisons. Those with an interest in numerology will surely have fun with the number "6" of the edition of 10--Jordan's championship ring count, Jordan's jersey digits multiplied, Kobe's (later) jersey digits added, etc.
But those well-versed in the modern trading card hobby will require no convincing regarding the supreme desirability of this card, particularly those who are aware of our February 2021 sale of a 1997 Upper Deck swatch auto card (8/23) featuring only Michael Jordan for $1.44 million. The investment potential for this even rarer commemorative would appear boundless.
