Description

A Bird, a Doctor and a Magician walk into a card...

1980 Topps Larry Bird/Julius Erving/Magic Johnson PSA Gem Mint 10. Basketball's Mount Rushmore in cardboard format, this glorious relic surpasses even the fabled 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan in desirability within the past four decades of trading card history. The elite status comes as absolutely no surprise given the illustrious status of the triumvirate pictured, with the added appeal of rookie status for the two legends who frame the Doctor at center. It could be argued that no trading card ever printed provides a greater volume of upper-pantheon immortals.

Certainly nobody is suggesting that the card itself is rare--nearly 9,000 examples appear within a PSA slab. But the Gem Mint 10 status of this particular model narrows the population to just twenty-two, placing it in the top quarter of one percent of all submissions. That makes the card a remarkably "condition rare" specimen. Consider that there are more than 300 Gem Mint examples of Michael Jordan's Fleer rookie in only twice as many submissions as this 1980 Topps card.

The two lines of perforations trisecting the card appear to be the factor that so strictly limits the Gem Mint population, as the slightest bend in those structures bar entry to the top rung of the PSA ladder. Here we find no such faults. In every metric for evaluation, perfection is the ultimate conclusion. Corners are razor-sharp, colors bright, registration and centering precise to the millimeter. An investment-quality piece for the uncompromising collector.
