Very Rare 1909 E102 "Set of 25" Honus Wagner, Throwing PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 - The Finest Known Example In The Hobby!
There really is no need to go into length about the greatness of the baseball legend featured on this card. Baseball fans and card collectors alike know who Honus Wagner wa,s and his contributions to the sport. Cards bearing his likeness, and not just the T206 hobby king, are among the most coveted and highly sought after cards the hobby has to offer. While his appearance in tobacco issues is, to say the least, "limited," his appearance on cards packaged with candy products fills a genuine void.

The authors of the American Card Catalog simply referred to the "E102" issue as a "Set of 25," as there is no known single sponsor. We can't fault their choice as card backs do list 25 subjects. There are four very rare second poses of four players making the issue truthfully a "Set of 29" cards. The Dots Miller "Fielding" pose is one of the most famously rarities but E102 fans know there are two that are far more rare.

As well-known as the name "Wagner" is, the rarity of his "Throwing" pose goes largely unrealized. Veteran E102 fans are all too aware of the rarity as it is missing from their sets. Its true status is bolstered by the fact this card is NOT noted in Jim Egan's, "Handbook to U.S. Early Candy and Gum Baseball Issues" and, in an October 2009 Heritage auction, a low grade example of this card was described as "one of only six total examples graded to date." Since then, only one more example has been graded by PSA in nine years! The SGC census adds only two other confirmed to our paltry total. We would be pleased to offer any example. The opportunity to present the highest graded example combining the PSA and SGC census is something special.

Graded PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 with nothing to contradict the assessment. It is a solid example and accurately graded in our opinion. Colors are rich and saturated, surrounding frame is a glowing white. As mentioned, this is one of only seven total PSA examples graded to date and is by far the highest graded example. The runner up is a lone VG-EX+, the best SGC entry is VG).

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
