Type 1 image dates to glorious 1927 season!

The Finest Known Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Signed Photograph, PSA/DNA Auto 9. There's always a potential for controversy when declaring any article of memorabilia to be the "finest known," but we suspect public opinion will fall very much in line with our own in this particular instance, a specimen that hits the bullseye for each and every standard of measurement.

Let's begin with the vintage. While the autographs are more consistent with those dating to the 1930's, the photo itself finds this iconic pair late in the 1927 season, one which would conclude with Babe Ruth's record sixty home run tally, Lou Gehrig's recognition as American League MVP, and a four-game World Series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The original paper caption on the back of this "World Wide Photos" news image speaks to that season's race for the home run title, reading in part, "The King Still Reigns...Lou 'Buster' Gehrig, pretender to the home-run crown, congratulates 'Babe' Ruth, who retained his title of 'Sultan of Swat' by outdistancing his younger rival in making round-trip hits, 9/15/27."

Next, we move to the autographs themselves, each accurately assessed at a soaring 9/10 by the persnickety experts at PSA/DNA, gentlemen who are never too quick to assign such a lofty rating to any signature. But the spectacular condition of the autographs is only part of the argument. It's quite rare to find signed photos from either of these Yankee legends that lacks a personalization, and this specimen is free of such undesirable adornment from both.

Finally, the image itself is one of our favorites of the iconic duo, documenting a mutual respect and affection that would survive well-documented jealousies and squabbles throughout the years. Clad in Yankee pinstripes at the height of their individual and collective powers, and clearly enjoying their shared success, the pair has never looked better. It's the ultimate Ruth/Gehrig photo in unsigned format, and an absolutely monumental treasure in its flawlessly autographed state. Dimensions 8x10", with only light edge and corner wear to report. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1 & Auto 9. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
