    Description

Signed 1933 Goudey Tris Speaker #89 PSA VG+ 3.5, PSA/DNA Auto 8. Tris Speaker (1888-1958) was as spectacular in the outfield as he was in the batter's box. His career spanned twenty-two seasons from 1907 through 1928, retiring the same year as fellow all-time legend Ty Cobb. When "The Grey eagle" earned his way into the 3,000 Hits Club in 1925 he was just the fifth man to do so, retiring three years later with 3,514 hits which paces him fifth on the All-Time list. His 792 doubles is still a Major League baseball record. When the Boston Red Sox were World Champions in 1912, Speaker was the home run leader with (10), he batted .383 (still didn't lead the league thanks to Cobb's .409 average) and had an on base percentage (OBP) of .464, all of which earned him MVP honors. His career year was in 1916 when Tris belted out 211 hits for a leading .386 average and .470 OBP. As an outfielder, it has been said he could tell where the ball was going just by the sound of the crack of the bat. While that could be bravado, his lifetime fielding average is .970 so there might be something to that.

Although Speaker had retired from guarding the outfield grass from being hit by baseballs, he did get a card in the 1933 Goudey series. While surviving examples are easily into the thousands, this is a very special card that beautifully shows off a blue ball point pen autograph raising across almost the entire width of the card. PSA had grade almost 500 unsigned cards while just four are noted on the PSA/DNA census. The card is solid mid-grade example that is graded PSA VG+ 3.5 while the unsmudged, uninterrupted and flowing autograph has been graded PSA/DNA Auto 8. This is by far the highest graded PSA/DNA assessed autograph.
