    Description

From the famous George Sands Collection that first entered the hobby in 1995!

Signed 1909-11 T206 Piedmont Ty Cobb (Portrait Green) PSA/DNA Poor 1. It's one of the most famous baseball portraits in the long history of our national pastime, the unmistakable work of renowned photographer Carl Horner, whose Cobb image is produced in both green and red background format in the hobby's premier tobacco issue. But the black fountain pen signature that adorns the inaugural class Hall of Famer's road grey jersey here is what truly sets it apart from the pack. Let's remember--the iconic Georgia Peach passed away in 1961, well before the practice of collecting signed trading cards came into vogue. And those few signed trading cards that do surface in the collecting community typically trend toward later issues, like the 1950 Callahan and others produced when youngsters were pioneering autograph collecting through the mail.

This particular specimen derives from the fabled "George Sands Collection" which saw its first turn on the auction block come over a quarter century ago, in 1995, as one of five acquired by the collection's namesake through the mail. You can see Cobb's personal stationery in that ancient auction listing (auction catalog is included in lot), providing a degree of provenance virtually unheard of for Cobb signed trading cards. The card is properly assessed at its Poor 1 rating, but the corner wear, scattered creases and the paper loss on the Piedmont advertising back--a likely indication of scrapbook removal--all remain mercifully clear of Cobb's autograph.

That bold fountain pen ink remains as bold as the date of its application, a bona fide 9/10, elevating the relic to the upper reaches of even that skimpiest of supplies. Cobb's National League counterpart, the immortal Honus Wagner, seems downright common when comparing that short-printed population of five dozen or so to autographed Cobb representations. If you have ever dreamed of ownership, show up on auction night ready to play to win. This may be the last chance you'll ever get.
