    Description

    The Iron Horse plans ahead...

Late 1930's Lou Gehrig Signed Photograph, PSA/DNA Mint 9. Those who knew him best always characterized Lou Gehrig as a thoroughly level-headed and practical gentleman, the Felix Unger to Babe Ruth's madcap Oscar Madison in that iconic Odd Couple, and this special lot serves as evidence of just how right they were. Evidently, as a time-saving measure, the Iron Horse would sometimes inscribe photographs with all but the recipient's name, so that when the flood of requests hit, he'd need only to apply that single word to keep the line moving. This specimen never did find a presentee.

We can confirm that the name hasn't been removed--there is not the slightest hint of an indentation of a fountain pen's nib in the blank space between Gehrig's "To" and his well-mannered conclusion, "With Kindest Regards, Lou Gehrig." But the ink that does appear is wonderfully bold, earning every point of its illustrious Mint 9 rating from the persnickety graders at PSA/DNA.

The 8x10" photo of the Hall of Fame first baseman selecting a weapon at the dugout steps of Yankee Stadium dates to the second half of the 1930's, a fact we can determine from the "NY" logo over Gehrig's heart, which returned in 1936 after a twenty-year absence from Yankee jerseys. The photo presents with only the slightest hints of handling and storage wear, in accordance with the high-grade theme of the signature upon it. Certainly one of the very best Gehrig signed photos we've offered. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Mint 9.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
