A splendid specimen from an Iron Horse in his prime!

Late 1920's Lou Gehrig Single Signed Baseball. Though it might appear that there are two signatures on the presented "Official League" sphere, it's important to state clearly that the second is of the facsimile variety, that of Thomas J. Hickey, who served as president of the American Association from 1917 to 1935. A consideration of the formation of the Gehrig inscription that appears on an adjacent panel leads us more precisely to the lot title we have selected, as we spot characteristics more consistent with those signed during the gilded seasons of 1927 and 1928 than those closer to the end of his partnership with Babe Ruth.

The point is largely moot, of course, as any Gehrig single carries enormous collecting appeal, and they seem to appear upon the auction block with greater rarity as examples find permanent homes. The presented specimen will be particularly appealing to the gentlemen named "Harry" in our clientele, as Gehrig "cordially" personalizes the ball to Wilson Sporting Goods employee Harry Braun, a member of the team hoping to ink endorsement deals with the Hall of Fame first baseman and his legendary colleague Babe Ruth.

Gehrig's elegant script makes full use of its landscape, and retains a conservative 7/10 boldness as it approaches its centennial. Included as a validation of provenance more than as a collectible in its own right, an engraved Wittnauer wristwatch once belonging to the owner of the baseball reads, "Good Luck to Harry A. Braun from The Wilson Gang, Feb. 1942." The watch does not appear to be functional at present. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
