Extremely Rare C. 1866 Grotecloss Studio "Union of Morrisania" Team CDV SGC Authentic.

CORRECTION: SGC does not have a policy against grading CDV's. We regret the misstatement.

Every baseball related item from the 1860's is a highly coveted prize acquisition. Nothing is common from this era and most pieces have no more than a handful of known examples. This was before there was an American League or a National League. The United States flag needed just thirty-one stars. Offered for the first time ever is a gorgeous CDV of the "Union of Morrisania" team from 1866 featuring twelve players and team manager. Player names are listed on the CDV but are not legible. Noteworthy players included Dave Birdsall, Charlie Pabor (Among first left-handed pitchers) and George Wright (Standing, fourth from the right). The back has an ad for "Grotecloss, Photographer: with "227 Bleecker St. Corner Carmine, New-York" for the address. A famous painting based upon this image resides in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Encapsulated SGC Authentic. The condition is almost too good to be true. Overall excellence is evident. The all-important photo of the pioneering team is exceptional. SGC policy dictates that CDV's will not be assigned numeric grades, but this would unquestionably earn top marks were that policy to change. This is one of just two known examples housed in a grading service slab. See our website for a brief history of the Union team.

    More Information:

The Morrisania baseball club was based in what is now called the Bronx, New York. Their first season, if you can call it that, was a one game contest against the "Young America" squad. It was a Morrisania 25-8 victory. The 1856 season was a 5-game effort. The next eight years saw little success but in 1865 the team went 13-10 for third place. The 13 wins was a club record. It was in 1866 when they saw their greatest success. Baseball pioneer George Wright played for the Unions for nine games at the end of the season achieving a first place ranking on a record of 25 wins and just 3 losses. A Championship title was still one season away. The team would play their last games in 1873.
