    Description

One of the finest known examples!

Circa 1940 Honus Wagner Single Signed Baseball. Ty Cobb called him, "maybe the greatest star ever to take the diamond," and Christy Mathewson judged him to be the only hitter he ever faced without a single weakness. Carrying two hundred pounds of weight on his five-foot eleven-inch frame, Wagner appeared laughably miscast as the most agile shortstop of the Dead Ball Era, or a man who would lead the National League five times in stolen bases and eight times as batting champion. But as an avatar for the hard-working blue collar residents of Pennsylvania steel country, he was the perfect fit.

He'd wear the uniform of the Pittsburgh Pirates for more than half a century as a player and coach, but single signed baseballs from the inaugural class Hall of Famer are unusually rare for such a protracted term of service to our national pastime. For decades, his primary claim to hobby fame has been his appearance upon The Standard Catalog's most celebrated trading card, the fabled Wagner T206.

We suspect that the soaring trajectory of the trading card market in the past year played a leading role in the surge in demand for Wagner's autograph, particularly in single signed baseball format. Our May 2021 Signature auction saw a fierce bidding battle conclude at a new record price of $126,000 for a high-grade Official American League specimen.

The signature style of the offered representation suggests it dates to the same era as that record example, and it likewise presents a blue ink sweet spot signature of virtually unimprovable strength. This one differs from its sibling only in the increased size of that autograph, and its appearance on a sphere from the Ford Frick presidency of the National League that contains the Pirates franchise. The ball appears to have been game used prior to its encounter with the Old Dutchman's fountain pen, but otherwise presents without any distractions worthy of mention. LOA from PSA/DNA. Just wanted to let you know how pleased I am regarding the sale of my hockey jersey. You were great to work with, you answered all my phone calls and e-mails in a prompt manner, and you did a great job marketing the jersey.
