    Description

Circa 1919 "Shoeless Joe" Jackson Original News Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. It took the greatest scandal in the history of our National Pastime to redefine Joe Jackson. He had been, for the last full decade of the Dead Ball Era, simply the greatest hitter on the planet, a distinction assigned to him by those most qualified to do so, the men who aspired to the title themselves. But where legends like Cobb and Williams turned a scientific eye to the process, deconstructing that fragment of a second that separates success from failure into parts far too small for the mere mortal to see, Jackson's approach was far less cerebral. An illiterate child laborer from the rural South, he was the prototypical "natural," the beneficiary of a gift from God that would be invoiced with a debt of ignominy yet to be forgiven.

This is arguably the most famous image of Jackson that exists, a simple portrait study of a man teetering on the borderline between acclaim and disgrace. A pair of paper captions affixed to the back relate to Jackson's legal woes in the immediate aftermath of the exposure of the Black Sox fix. We also find handwritten editor's notations here, and "International" news service stamping. Dimensions are 7x5". Scattered creases and chipping at corners are noted in the interest of full disclosure, but our catalog imagery should convey that the photo presents wonderfully despite these minor flaws. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1.
