    Description

Circa 1918 Tris Speaker Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 6. He would become the fifth man to be welcomed into the 3,000 Hit Club in 1925, retiring three years later with 3,514 base knocks to his credit, today good enough for fifth in baseball history. But the legendary Grey Eagle was still solidly in his prime when the folks at Spalding delivered this professional model bat to baseball's most prolific doubles hitter.

While the lack of factory ordering records leaves Spalding models without the sort of documentary evidence we enjoy from Hillerich & Bradsby, leading bat expert John Taube stresses in his letter of authenticity that this version of center brand and barrel stamping are professional model only, and that the bat could have only been ordered by Speaker himself. Taube strengthens the claim with an assurance that the length (34.75") and weight (34.1 oz.) are consistent with the H&B records for that period.

The bat exhibits outstanding game use, with a multitude of ball marks and cleat divots, and the outline of grip tape on the uncracked handle. A letter "H" carved into the barrel end might suggest secondary usage, though this is pure supposition. It's just the third Speaker bat we have had the honor to present to the collecting community, the other's each selling in the $40,000 neighborhood within the past three years. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 6. LOA from MEARS, A7.
