Description

Circa 1915 Honus Wagner "Eyes" Original News Photograph by Charles Conlon, PSA/DNA Type 1. Compelling photographic portrait of the Old Dutchman is unmistakably the work of Charles Conlon, the foremost visual documentarian of the Dead Ball Era game. Regular Heritage bidders will recall our offering of "The Charles Conlon Photographic Archive" last August, a comprehensive collection of the artist's original negatives that commanded a massive $1.8M winning bid. That figure only begins to place the importance of Conlon's work in its proper context.

This image would be considered one of the highlights of Conlon's oeuvre, and unquestionably one of the most famous and desirable photographic portraits of the inaugural class Hall of Famer. Conlon rather daringly departs from the industry standard with a super-close-up of the aging legend, and this artistic choice is apparent in his most celebrated and coveted images.

The print measures 7x5" and presents marvelously, with only inconsequential tack holes and a pin-head of emulsion loss on Wagner's forehead to report. Verso holds extensive editorial pencil notations and Conlon's studio stamp, as well as a holographic sticker identifying the photo as having been sold as part of the famous 1996 sale of the "Baseball Magazine" archives. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
