    Description

    c. 1880s Carlisle Indians Baseball Cabinet Card by J.N. Choate. With a various points of interest within this single 4.25x6" cabinet photograph we will spin a globe around and randomly point, leading us to start with the photographer - John N. Choate. The son of a sharecropper, Choate moved to the Carlisle, Pennsylvania area shortly after the end of the Civil War and just as baseball was taking off in East Coast cities. His earliest work focused mostly on the scenic locales and early business/industry in the surrounding area but shifted once the Carlisle Indian Industrial School opened its doors in 1879. The lensman would use the students and their daily lives as his muse until his death in 1902. Presently over 1200 glass negatives (including one of this particular photograph) reside in the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institution.

While schools like Carlisle remain controversial in nature, the school's production of Jim Thorpe has given it a high stature in the minds of Americans. Four unidentified players for the school in full uniform with "Y.A." (for Young Indians" emblazoned on their chests are pictured. Mild wear exhibited on the cabinet with one chip in the center of the image. Lower portion and reverse feature Choate markings.
