    Description

    C. 1866 Grotecloss CDV Charles "The Old Woman" Pabor SGC Authentic. Offered is a CDV featuring baseball pioneer Charles Pabor of the Unions of Morrisania. The team called Morrisania (a small town in New York that is today called the Bronx) home as far back as 1862. His professional career as a player and manager spanned the entire existence of the National Association from 1871 through 1875. His full nickname was "The Old Woman in the Red Cap." The Unions wore red caps as did women during the French Revolution to hold their knitting supplies but the connection might also be from the uniform of the 14th Brooklyn (volunteer infantry) which Pabor might have been a part of which included red hats inspired by the French Chasseurs. This piece is absolutely amazing. Not only is this a relic from the earliest era of American baseball it has survived in phenomenal condition. The photographic portrait is brilliant and bold, just as it was over 150 years ago. As best as we can determine is a totally unique example and the first to individually feature Pabor! On May 4, 1871, Pabors' Cleveland Forest Citys played the Fort Wayne Kekiongas for what is considered the first game ever between two professional baseball clubs. Image quality is exceptional. There is one scuff in the lower left corner and one "ding" in the top border. The card mount has some very mild staining on the reverse, vertical wrinkles and edges that do not appear hand cut in our opinion. Encapsulated SGC Authentic. SGC did not give it a number grade due to a policy they have against doing so for CDVs. Regardless, it is very possibly a totally unique item. There is a CDV of catcher Dave "The Old Man" Birdsall. These two items are among the very first individual baseball player cards.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
