1993 SP Derek Jeter #279 PSA Mint 9. Derek Jeter is known as "The Captain" for his leadership, and this 1993 SP rookie card is also a leader for its combination of a great player on a great and unique card at a special time. Three words define Jeter: smart, steady, and clutch. For "smart," take his spectacular play in the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics in 2001. Racing in from his shortstop position to be a third cut-off man with Jason Giambi heading home, Jeter, near home plate, snared the errant outfield throw bare-handed and flipped the ball, backhanded to the plate to catch the runner. For "steady," he spent all 20-years of his Major League career with the Yankees, rarely missing a game and winning five Gold Gloves. For "clutch," think of his stellar post-season batting average of .308, helping the Yankees to win five World Series, and hitting a home run for his 3,000th hit. Jeter's time is approaching, the near-unanimous selection to the Hall of Fame is coming in 2021 (delayed due to COVID).

The front of the card shows Jeter starting to turn two. The 1993 SP foil cards were a subset of the regular 1993 SP issue and comprise the last twenty cards. Their distinctive appearance has great eye appeal, but the cards are extremely condition sensitive. The front has a full color action photo set over a silver metallic surface. The problem with the all-foil fronts is that just taking the cards from a pack can cause corner or edge damage, as edge chipping is very common. The 1993 SP Jeter is by far considered his best rookie card. Graded PSA Mint 9.
