    Description

Includes handwritten Rose letter of provenance!

1985 Pete Rose Game Worn Cincinnati Reds Jersey from Day of Record-Breaking 4,192nd Hit. The most prolific hitter in over fourteen decades of Major League history is likewise one of its most complicated figures, a man whose indomitable ambition served as the highly combustible fuel propelling him to the heights of both fame and ignominy. But whether Rose's banishment from the game lasts forever, or if he is ultimately welcomed back into forgiving arms, his career hits record--arguably the most significant of all baseball metrics--will almost certainly outlive us all. In more than three decades since he leapfrogged the iconic Ty Cobb, only two players have risen to within a thousand hits of his 4,256.

The presented jersey was worn on September 11, 1985 in front of a sellout crowd at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, a date stamped in bold lettering in our national pastime's record books. Rose's single in the bottom of the first inning was number 4,192, establishing the forty-four-year old Charlie Hustle as the new Hit King.

It is important to note that this is not the jersey that Rose was wearing as he broke the record, but rather one worn later in the game for the express purpose of maximizing the financial windfall from the day's achievement. While this practice of wearing multiple uniforms for milestone and record-breaking games for subsequent sale has become commonplace in recent years, we're aware of no earlier incidence than Rose's record-breaking hit game, a fact that establishes this piece as not only an historic relic of baseball history, but of baseball memorabilia history as well.

The classic format is effectively identical to that which the Big Red Machine wore to World Championship glory a decade earlier, with Rose's number "14" and the team logo patch adorning right and left chest respectively in red and white tackle twill, and "Rose 14" similarly applied to verso. Lower left front tail holds proper "W.A. Goodman & Sons [size] 43" label. Solid game wear is evident, suggesting that the jersey saw extended use prior to that late-season achievement, most apparent in sweat staining at the armpits. Upper left chest bears a 9/10 black sharpie signature with the important attribution, "Best Wishes, Pete Rose, 9-11-85."

Beyond the notation on the garment itself, Rose attests to the special significance with a handwritten message on Reds letterhead, which reads:

"Lou: The jersey acquired by [blank] is an authentic home jersey worn on Sept. 11 1985 but was not worn at the time of the record breaking hit. [signed] Pete Rose."

Letter of provenance from Pete Rose. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
