    Description

1985 Goose Gossage Game Worn & Signed San Diego Padres Jersey. Rich Gossage's physical presence, aggressive demeanor, and vaunted fastball intimidated batters for more than two decades. In fact, a 1970's guide to pitchers rated the Gossage's fastball behind only Nolan Ryan's from 1975-79. Known for speaking his mind, the Goose once noted, "If I'm a batter I wouldn't hit against myself." Commentating on the role of relievers today versus when he played, he observed, "It takes three guys to do what I did." And likening pitchers to race racehorses he remarked, "If you train a horse to race half a block, that's all he's going to be able to run."

Gossage's Major League journey took him all over the country as he appeared with nine teams in a twenty-two year career. His fourth stop was in San Diego where he stifled rallies for the Padres from 1984-87, helping them reach their first Fall Classic in 1984. The season in which he wore the jersey offered here, 1985, he was in prime form, post a 1.82 ERA and twenty-six saves while earning his ninth All-Star berth.

Home white pinstripe is a first-year style with "Padres" ascending across the chest and "Gossage" arched on the verso with "54" below, all of which is sewn-on in robust brown on orange tackle twill. "RAK" appears on the left sleeve with a "Wilson 46" label in the collar and a "54 85" swatch in the tail. Solid overall game wear to the fabric, identifiers and tags. The verso is also impeccably signed and inscribed "Goose Gossage HOF 2008" in 10/10 silver paint pen. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
