The only Schmidt jersey from his 1980 MVP & World Championship season ever to appear at auction!

1980 Mike Schmidt Game Worn Philadelphia Phillies Jersey, MEARS A10. The single best Major League Baseball jersey of the decade? A strong argument could be made in support of that contention. This is a gamer that has absolutely everything going for it, from the original owner to the vintage to the glorious style that instantly evokes the best of times in the City of Brotherly Love.

We'll begin with the Hall of Fame third baseman, one of the most decorated Big Leaguers of the post-war era with twelve All-Star appearances, three MVP Awards, ten Gold Gloves, six Silver Sluggers, and eight National League home run crowns. But Schmidt's bulging trophy case contains only a single World Championship ring, and that date matches the embroidered swatch in the tail of this extraordinary garment.

Yes, during eighteen seasons of service to the baseball fans of eastern Pennsylvania, the red-headed leviathan tasted the champagne of World Championship glory only once, at the close of a campaign that saw him lead both the National League and his other seventeen Big League years in home runs (48) and runs batted in (121), capturing two-thirds of the fabled Triple Crown. Quite simply, the Phillies won the 1980 World Championship because of Mike Schmidt. This statement is not in any way controversial.

Finally, that powder blue, zipper-front format is the quintessential Phillies style, one of the high-water marks of Major League fashion, still commonly spotted in the grandstands of Citizens Bank Park today. And that's the only place you'll find the number "20" that shares space here with a logo "P" on the chest and a four-inch block lettered "Schmidt" on verso, as the digits were properly retired with their owner from on-field use.

An embroidered swatch inside the collar reads, "Schmidt," while lower left front tail provides proper "Wilson [size] 46" label above the aforementioned "80 1" year/set swatch. The experts at MEARS failed to find a single fault in their assessment--even the zipper remains functional--assigning a perfect 10 rating. They characterize game use as "moderate," thus consistent with a full season's wear. This first opportunity to compete for a 1980 Schmidt gamer may well also be your last, so bid accordingly. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

Just wanted to let you know how pleased I am regarding the sale of my hockey jersey. You were great to work with, you answered all my phone calls and e-mails in a prompt manner, and you did a great job marketing the jersey.
