1977 Lou Piniella World Series Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey, MEARS A8--Photo Matched!One of the most beloved Yankees not enshrined in Cooperstown, this 1969 American League Rookie of the Year was a key component of the Bronx Bombers' return to glory in the late 1970's after the franchise's longest World Championship drought since Babe Ruth's arrival. The offered pinstriped jersey finds Sweet Lou in the midst of that time, the garment definitively matched to photographs of 1977 World Series action by the experts at Resolution Photomatching.
The classic format features a logo "NY" over the heart and number "14" on verso. Apparent tobacco staining on obverse, and wear to the numerals, account for the two points lost in MEARS' evaluation. Interior collar holds "Piniella" embroidered swatch, while lower left front tail is tagged "Wilson [size] 42" above an embroidered "77 1" swatch. Nearby, a blue sharpie signature completes the package.
Heavy game wear is evident, suggesting that Piniella wore the garment regularly during that unforgettable summer when the Son of Sam was terrorizing New York, and the glorious autumn when the Yankees reclaimed their rightful position atop the baseball mountain.
