Mr. Cub's proud symbol of baseball immortality

1977 Ernie Banks Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ring. It was a beautiful day in Cooperstown when Ernie Banks stood at the podium to accept his membership within the sport's most esteemed brotherhood, the kind of afternoon that had always made the superstar slugger wish for a doubleheader. With his nineteen seasons of elite service provided to a team still mired in a World Championship drought of a century and counting, the presented ring represents the most significant hardware ever earned by the 500 Home Run Clubster.

The design will be instantly recognizable to those who occupy the upper reaches of the collecting community, a silver baseball set in a black onyx upon the ring face, with raised text at the perimeter reporting, "Baseball Hall of Fame." Left shank provides crossed bats and ball imagery, framed beneath engraved text that states, "Banks, Elected 1977." Right shank reads "SS" for shortstop, above a relief image of the Hall of Fame building.

In the interest of full disclosure, we report that the ring exhibits some inconsistencies with other known examples, notably the engraving style and the absence of "Balfour" manufacturer's stamping at interior band. But we can confirm, with complete assurance, that this ten karat gold ring is the one that Banks proudly wore until his passing, a fact that we can confirm with photography, as well as with the letter of provenance from the woman who served as his caretaker and the executor of his estate.

A man known as well for his unfailingly sunny disposition as he was for his elite skills, Banks informed the legions of fans assembled at Cooperstown to witness his induction that the day was the happiest of his life. We hope that the winning bidder for this historic relic is the beneficiary of the thoroughly positive vibrations that continue to emanate from it. We thank photographer Bob Hunt for the use of his photograph of Ernie Bank's hand wearing the offered ring. Letter of provenance from the Estate of Ernie Banks.
