1976 Tom Seaver Game Worn & Signed New York Mets Jersey, MEARS A9.5--Photo Matched! It took just seven seasons to turn the fledgling New York Mets from the laughingstock of professional sports to Amazin' World Champions, and there's arguably no man more essential to that stunning transformation than Tom Terrific. One of the sport's all-time greatest right-handed power pitchers, Seaver recorded 3,640 strikeouts and 311 victories during his Hall of Fame career, claiming three Cy Young Awards in the process.The presented home white pinstriped jersey was worn the season after his third and final--he'd finish eighth in Cy Young voting in 1976, but first in the National League in strikeouts with a soaring tally of 235. His 2.59 earned run average led all Mets starters, as did his 271 innings of work. We can witness the evidence of this protracted, sweaty wear in the softness of the tackle twill identifiers and tail tagging. The classic blue-on-orange "Mets" script joins Seaver's long-retired number "41" on the chest, those digits repeated in larger format on verso. Sleeves are packed with design features--a team logo patch and a black mourning band for original team owner Joan Payson and manager Casey Stengel at left, and National League Centennial patch at right. Interior collar holds "45 76 41" embroidered swatch, while tail reveals "Rawlings [size] 46" label with "Set 1" flag tag. Seaver's bold black sharpie signature underscores his handwritten notation, "My '76 game jersey," on chest.
The experts at MEARS stop just short of a perfect rating for this glamorous garment, taking issue only with the replacement of the Centennial sleeve patch, which they stress is a period original. Otherwise, the jersey remains in 100% original and unaltered condition.
