Description
Great reference to Hank Aaron's pursuit of Babe Ruth's home run record!
1973 Peanuts Original Comic Strip Artwork by Charles Schulz. It's the most popular and influential strip in the history of comics, a half-century labor of love of WWII veteran Charles M. Schulz that appeared in 2,600 newspapers in seventy-five countries at its height, translated into twenty-one languages. Despite global popularity, few articles of visual art could be considered more thoroughly American than original Peanuts strips, and nowhere is that characterization more true in than those representations featuring the recurrent theme of our National Pastime. This is the most intriguing such example we've ever encountered, as the two primary stars of the strip discuss an impending, historic changing of the guard. On the sidelines of the sandlot where Charlie Brown endured countless humiliations, he advises Snoopy, "If you don't hit a home run today and tie Babe Ruth's record, Hank Aaron will beat you to it!"
Aaron struck the twenty-ninth home run of his 1973 season in a ten to two Atlanta Braves victory over the Chicago Cubs on the August 16, 1973 publishing date of the strip, lifting him to a career 702, just a dozen short of the Babe's record. Hammerin' Hank would ultimately beat the talented beagle to the finish line, supplanting the Yankee legend on April 8, 1974.
The strip is expertly rendered in bold black ink, with a small copyrighting strip glued to the interior right edge of the third panel. Visible dimensions are 5.5x27", with a professional matting and framing expanding the display to a final 14x35". Magnificent condition, with no visual distractions to report.
