1971 Al Kaline Game Worn Detroit Tigers Jersey, MEARS A9.
"Mr. Tiger" still had a few good years ahead of him the season he
suited up in this road grey flannel, but that fabric that had seen
use through all seven decades of franchise existence would be
retired at the end of the 1971 season, opening the door to the age
of "the knit." What better way to bid farewell than a jersey from
the team's greatest star since Ty Cobb?One of our favorite Kaline stories circles the vintage of the offered jersey. After batting .278 in 1970, the Hall of Fame slugger refused the $5,000 pay raise offered to him by Tigers management, believing he had not earned it. He'd elevate that average to .294 in 1971 and only then allow himself to become the franchise's first ever six-figure man, at an even $100,000.
The jersey exhibits marvelous wear from that special season, presenting in 100% original and unaltered condition but for a single missing button. The simple format features a block lettered "Detroit" across chest and "Kaline 6" on verso. And we'll always love the repetition of that long-since retired digit at right sleeve, tailored short to showcase the bicep.
Interior collar holds a sweat-softened "Rawlings [size] 42" label, while interior tail reveals a washing instructions label anchoring a "Set 1 #8P 1971" flap tag. No staining, tearing or moth holes leaves the garment primed for proud display. LOA from MEARS, A9. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
