Hank hammers forty-four homers during Major Leagues' Centennial season
1969 Hank Aaron Game Worn Atlanta Braves Jersey, MEARS A10. We'd put numerology on the shelf with the rest of the pseudosciences--astrology, graphology, phrenology--but the unusual recurrence of the double-fours in Hank Aaron's stat lines tempts belief from even the most hardened cynic. Four times (there it is again!) the former, and many would claim "legitimate," Home Run King matched his jersey number in annual homers, including the historic 1969 centennial season from which this pinstriped beauty derives. Though fellow Hall of Famer and 500 Home Run Club member Willie McCovey would outpace Aaron by one to lead all National Leaguers in the statistic, the Braves outfielder's 332 total bases in 1969 marked his final appearance atop that category. He remains to this day the career leader. It's arguably the most significant offensive statistic in the sport.With one hundred runs scored to accompany his ninety-seven driven in, Aaron was the team's leading offensive power yet again this year, lifting the Braves to the first ever National League Championship Series. They'd fall in a sweep to the Miracle Mets, but the season was still a resounding success after eight years of rising no further than the middle of the Senior Circuit pack.
Presented is a rare home white pinstriped jersey worn to distinction by a man who Mickey Mantle called "the best ballplayer of my era." It happens to be the same jersey Aaron wears in a photograph with Mantle and Willie Mays as the Mick tended to his color commentator duties for NBC's "Game of the Week." Navy tackle twill spells "Braves" in script across the jersey chest, with number "44" similarly applied to verso. Left and right sleeves hold team logo and Baseball Centennial patches respectively. Interior collar is adorned with an embroidered swatch reporting, "H Aaron, 1969 set 2" while lower left front tail finds the proper "Wilson [size] 40" manufacturer's label. Chest is autographed in 9/10 black sharpie.
It's been over four years since Heritage sold Aaron's rookie road jersey for over $167,000, as clear an indication as any of the enduring respect he commands within the collecting community.
