    Description

Letter of provenance from Cubs business manager Eldred "Salty" Saltwell!

1969 Ernie Banks Game Worn Chicago Cubs Jersey, MEARS A10--Photo Matched! They'd win eleven of the first twelve games of the 1969 season, and as Apollo XI landed on the Moon and Jimi Hendrix blew minds at Woodstock, it appeared that the Chicago Cubs were an absolute lock for postseason play. Midway through August, they led the second place New York Mets by a season-high nine games, and were still up by five as they entered the final month of the season.

Eight days later, that lead had evaporated, and things went from bad to worse as the New York Mets proved virtually unbeatable while the Cubs closed out the season losing seventeen of its final twenty-five games, squandering the team's best opportunity in decades to end its historic championship drought. At 92-70, the franchise's best season since their last pennant in 1945, the Cubs were left with only heartbreak.

But the passage of a half-century, and a 2016 World Championship, have done much to heal the despair of that historic meltdown, and this road grey flannel exhibits fine wear from that team's greatest star. It entered the collecting community through the personal collection of Cubs business manager Eldred "Salty" Saltwell, and survives in 100% original and unaltered condition, earning every point of its unimprovable MEARS assessment.

The jersey exhibits game wear characterized as "moderate" and "consistent," featuring the classic blue tackle twill "Chicago 14" text on chest, with those long-since retired digits taking up residence on verso in larger format. Left and right sleeve bear the team logo and important Major League Baseball Centennial patches respectively. Interior collar bears embroidered swatch announcing "14-69-4-40." We should note that the Cubs numbered their two home sets 1 and 2 and their two road sets 3 and 4 during the 1969 season. Lower left front tail holds proper "Wilson [size] 40" label above an embroidered "1969" year identifier. No staining or damage of any kind is apparent.

The experts at Sports Investors Authentication have definitively matched the jersey to Getty Image #462782900, while their letter suggests multiple other probable matches. With team executive provenance, 100% original condition, and photo matching to an unforgettable season in Cubs history, this is unquestionably one of the finest of the rare few surviving Banks jerseys available to the collecting marketplace.
