1968 Topps Johnny Bench - Reds Rookies #247 PSA Gem Mint 10 - Dimitri Young Collection. Presented is the opportunity to own the Johnny Bench card that generates the most interest from collectors and investors alike, Bench's rookie card which he shares with pitcher Ron Tompkins. As a young boy, Bench was told by his father, "Catcher is the fastest way to the big leagues because that's what they want...." So, Johnny became a catcher at age five. After a cup of coffee with the Reds in 1967, Bench made the club as the starting catcher in this 1968 season. No shrinking violet, Bench was catching Jim Maloney in a spring training game and Maloney, who had a diminished fastball, keep shaking off Bench when Johnny called for a curve. Bench said to Maloney, "Your fastball's not popping." Maloney replied with a choice expletive. So, Bench called for the heater again and caught the fastball barehanded. Point made. Bench went on to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award - the first time for a catcher, and also took the NL Golden Glove Award - the first time for a rookie.

In his Hall of Fame career, Bench was a 2-time MVP, a 14-time All-Star, a 3-time RBI leader, and a 2-time home run champ, the Major League catcher to lead a league in homers. He once held the all-time homer record for catchers, since broken by Carlton Fisk, and then by the current holder, Mike Piazza. Popularizing the one-hand catching style to prevent injuries, Bench won ten Gold Gloves. He was a key player of the great Big Red Machine of the 1970s when Cincinnati won six division titles, four pennants and two World Series crowns. Here's a great chance to have the rookie card of the consensus greatest catcher in history.

Graded PSA Gem Mint 10. With submissions at the 8,800 level, only fifteen have earned the Gem Mint label. Do the math and you'll find this card represents just one-fifth of one-percent of those submissions.
