Population One!

1968 Topps 3-D Roberto Clemente PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. The late-1960's and early 1970's was a very productive era for Topps who tested various projects utilizing a wide assortment of treatments and formats to enhance sales. A full two years before Kellogg's picked up the "Xograph" technology that gave cards a 3-Dimensional appearance, Topps tried to use a 3-D effect that was caused by a blurred background and a thin plastic covering over the front of the 2 - 1/4" by 3 - 1/2" cards. Topps test marketed an extremely limited number of cards of a dozen players, the key subject from the group is Roberto Clemente. As Topps sometimes did, the test issue was only distributed around the area of New York City. The set was never intended for a full public release. 1968 Topps 3-D cards are found with a blank back or with a stamp saying cards are not for resale and to return to Visual Panographics, Inc.

The value of the card rests upon a few factors. First, there was Roberto Clemente's great career. The Hall of Fame right fielder played 18 seasons, all with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He finished his baseball life with exactly 3,000 hits and a lifetime average of .317. Second, the card's condition and overall scarcity. Topps found that producing the 3-D cards was just too expensive, and so the test release didn't lead to larger production. And last but not least, it is one of the coolest looking cards ever produced! Graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. This is the only card of its kind graded NM-MT+ with sixteen higher.
