Cooperstown-quality flannel from The Say Hey Kid

1967 Willie Mays Game Worn San Francisco Giants Jersey, MEARS A8. He was rated number two on The Sporting News' list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players of the Twentieth Century," topped only by the iconic Babe Ruth. There are many who would contend that it was Mays deserved top billing--in the end, it comes down to your particular definition of "greatness." That Babe Ruth was the most noteworthy figure in twentieth century baseball is difficult to dispute. And it's true that he was the game's premier pitcher before he became the game's premier slugger. But if baseball's "five tools" is the metric--hitting for average, hitting for power, baserunning, throwing and fielding--Mays' superiority is clear.

The presented home white flannel finds the iconic Hall of Famer in his sixteenth season of Giants service, in the midst of a nineteen-year streak of All-Star appearances and an unbroken twelve-year chain of Gold Glove ownership. The experts at MEARS assess game wear as "moderate to heavy," bearing witness to dozens of games of service in the center field grass of Candlestick Park. The time-tested design worn throughout Mays long service to the franchise features a black felt on orange tackle twill "Giants" across the chest and the fabled number "24" on reverse, digits retired from service the day after Mays was dealt to the New York Mets in 1972. Interior collar holds embroidered "Mays" swatch, while lower left front tail presents proper "Tim McAuliffe Inc." manufacturer's label with "'67" year and "42" size tags below. A 9/10 black sharpie autograph hovers just above.

The jersey remains in 100% original and unaltered condition, surrendering points only due to minor separation of the stitching on rear numerals, scattered staining and fraying of the black and orange trim. None of these issues significantly diminish the quality of display, as our catalog imagery will effectively demonstrate. The jersey appears to be the one that Mays is wearing in Getty Image number 91223825. LOA from MEARS, A8. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).
