Two Big Apple legends join forces...

1966 Mickey Mantle Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman.
"I used to go out to Yankee Stadium quite a bit," America's greatest sports artist once told an admirer. "Mickey Mantle served as my favorite subject in the line-up. He was never surprised when he sent a towering home run and neither was the expectant crowd." The greatest sports artist ever to hold a brush, Neiman was a fixture at practically every noteworthy sporting event of the second half of the twentieth century, never far from the action of Super Bowls, World Series and Championship fights.

Among the most famous American artists of any age or genre, Neiman was likewise one of the most prolific, yet the enormous demand for his distinctive, kaleidoscopic works remains far from satiated. The continued upward trajectory of sale prices, a trend which has found Heritage Auctions prominently at the vanguard, is a matter of public record. And while the market booms across the full spectrum of his work, Neiman is most closely associated with two sports icons, both the most sought-after subjects in the master's oeuvre.

First is Muhammad Ali, who appeared on a spectacular Neiman work that garnered $155,350 in the 2012 Heritage Platinum Night Auction. Next is Mickey Mantle, who likewise summited the six-figure plateau in a recent Heritage event, commanding $131,450 in February 2013.

Here we present a marvelous tribute to the latter, a full-body portrait that finds Mantle at the center of a swirling vortex of heavily applied paint that has long served as the Neiman trademark. Work is signed "Leroy Neiman '66" at lower right. The 24x12" oil on board, excluding the thin "float" frame, presents flawlessly, bearing a bold black sharpie inscription from the subject that reads, "To Scritch, My Best Wishes, Mickey Mantle, 9/13/89."

We are informed that "Scritch" refers to Lyle "Scritch" Henderson, who served as the original bandleader for The Tonight Show during the 1950's and 1960's. Verso bears stamping of New York City's "Hammer Galleries, which hosted an exhibition of Neiman's works in the fall of 1983. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
