1965 Topps Joe Morgan - Astros 1965 Rookie Stars #16 PSA Gem Mint 10 - Dimitri Young Collection. "Little Joe" Morgan could play. Anyone could see that. But when scouts came to check out his teammate at Oakland, California's Castlemont High School - future MLB pitcher Rudy May - the scouts saw that future Hall of Famer Morgan was 5' 7", and Joe never got a professional offer or an opportunity for a college scholarship. So, Joe played ball at Oakland City College, a two-year school, and finally scouts began to concentrate on his ability rather than his lack of height. Joe signed with the Houston Colt .45s in 1962. In '63 and '64, Joe played outstanding baseball in the minors and was brought up by the Major League club after rosters expanded for a few games. His true rookie season was in '65. Joe played regularly at second base, hit .271, scored a hundred runs and led the NL with 97 walks. He was second in the Rookie of the Year vote. Morgan played at Houston through the 1971 season and then was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. As a key part of the Big Red Machine, Morgan was amazing. He helped the Reds to World Series championships in both '75 and '76, and Joe was the NL MVP both seasons. In '75, he hit .327 with 17 homers, 94 RBI, 107 runs, 67 steals and led the NL in walks (132), OBP (.466), and OPS (.974). In '76, he hit .320 with 27 homers, 111 RBI, and 113 runs, and 60 steals, and led the NL in OBP (.444), SLG (.576), and OPS (1.020). After the Reds, Morgan finished out his career with Houston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Oakland. Sharing the card is 12-year National League shortstop and center fielder Sonny Jackson.

Joe Morgan passed away in October 2020. Hall of Famer Morgan was a 10-time All-Star and won five Gold Gloves. A Morgan Gem Mint rookie is a valued addition for any collection. This an exceedingly rare Gem Mint card of a player who baseball stat guru Bill James calls, "The best second baseman of all time." Graded PSA Gem Mint 10. One of only two cards graded GEM MINT!
