American League Championship season!
1965 Harmon Killebrew Signed Game Worn & Signed Minnesota Twins
Jersey, MEARS A7."No individual has ever meant more to the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of fans across Twins territory than Harmon Killebrew," Twins president Dave St. Peter declared in his 2011 eulogy of the fallen slugger. The statement was not the least bit controversial. For twenty-one seasons and 2,329 games, Killebrew had served the franchise with honor, leaving Minnesota after the 1974 season owning the team record for appearances, home runs, runs batted in and total bases, each still standing to this day.
So for the legions of Twins faithful, it doesn't get any better than game worn flannel from the beloved Killer. Here we present a fine example thereof, deriving from the first American League Championship season in Minnesota, and the first for the franchise since the 1933 Washington Senators. Killer proved to be a clutch performer in toppling the mighty Yanks, who had captured the flag in fourteen of the previous sixteen seasons, plating the tying or winning run seven times during the regular season, and later taking Don Drysdale deep in Game Four of the World Series.
That contest was at Dodger Stadium, a fact that suggests the presented road grey jersey may well have been part of Killebrew's wardrobe that day, and solid game wear suggests a full season's use. We must note that the number "3" on reverse is restored to its original position after having been changed for secondary farm club wear, as was standard for the time. The experts at MEARS confirm that all other identifiers--the "Twins" on the chest, the logo patch on left sleeve, the "Killebrew" swatch in the collar and "Spalding [size] 44" label above "Killebrew 3, 44 65" embroidery in the tail--are original and unaltered.
A bold blue sharpie signature on the chest completes the package, with Killebrew adding "1965 AL Champs" for good measure. He signs again on rear numeral in silver, adding, "573 HR's, HOF 84." A splendid memento that commemorates the first American League Championship in Minnesota Twins history through its all-time greatest figure. LOA from MEARS, A7. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
