His last American League Championship season!

1964 Mickey Mantle Signed New York Yankees Player's Contract. It was the last great season of Mickey Mantle's career, one in which he was denied his fourth American League MVP Award only by our good friend Brooks Robinson, whose trophy for the honor commanded $155,350 in our November 2015 auction. Check the Mick's career stats and you'll see that 1964 contains his last bold ink of American League supremacy, all related to the combination of slugging and on-base percentage. Mantle would record thirty-five home runs and twenty-five doubles along with ninety-nine bases on balls during the 1964 season, a testament to the fear he struck into the hearts of opposing pitchers.

Hard luck and hard living would increasingly hobble the mighty slugger during the last four campaigns of his Hall of Fame career, but this final great season proves just how essential Mantle was to the Yankee cause--the Bronx would not see October baseball for another dozen years after the one this contract represents. It's a solid testament to how inextricably linked the fortunes of the man and the team used to be.

The document itself is a standard format "Uniform Player's Contract," assigning Mantle his career-high $100,000 annual salary, his second season at that pay grade. The Mick signs his acceptance of the terms in 9/10 red ink on the third page, while former teammate and manager Ralph Houk signs for the ballclub as newly-minted general manager is equivalently strong blue.

Joining the contract is Houk's unsigned cover letter, informing Mantle that his 1963 salary would be repeated for 1964, and asking for a swift return of two signed copies of the contract. Both the contract and cover letter exhibit original mailing folds but no other issues of distraction. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
