    Population one of one!

1963 Topps Pete Rose - 1963 Rookie Stars #537 PSA Gem Mint 10.

Charlie had only just begun to Hustle when this card introduced him to baseball fans during a freshman season punctuated by the first 170 hits of his march to athletic immortality. "Somebody's gotta win and somebody's gotta lose," Rose once told reporters. "I believe in letting the other guy lose." Like the legend whose seemingly untouchable record he bested in 1985, Pete Rose was a man whose single-minded determination made him one of the most successful players in the history of the sport, and one of the most feared.

Of the dozens of Hall of Famers who made their Topps debut in the 1960's, only the rookie card of another owner of one of the sport's most unassailable records--Strikeout King Nolan Ryan--can approach the historical significance that card #537 from the 1963 edition enjoys and has earned. The disembodied head design may not win awards from art critics, but the magnificent condition of the offered specimen most assuredly will.

In fact, like the man it honors, this card stands alone atop the full population of competitors, the only specimen in more than 3,500 submissions to PSA to earn that firm's loftiest assessment. The card's full-bleed header is the culprit for those looking to assign blame for the dearth of elite representations, a feature that amplifies even the slightest hint of wear. But here you'll find nothing of that sort, just an unbroken sky of blue. Likewise perfect is the full contingent of assessment metrics: color, registration, gloss, centering.

As "new blood" has come flooding into the upper reaches of the trading card market in recent months, elite rookie pricing records have been drowned beneath that rising tide. Most experts believe, however, that we are still in the dawn of that surge. Thus we expect investment-minded collectors to play to win when this singular relic crosses our Platinum Night auction block.
