The Say Hey Kid is perfect at Wrigley

1962 Willie Mays All-Star Game Used & Signed Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8.5. Only Hank Aaron (21) has graced the Midsummer Classic more often than Willie Mays (20), and the iconic pair shared the center field grass of Wrigley Field for this second All-Star Game of the 1962 season, Mays taking a seat in the National League dugout after recording his second single of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Though he would not clear the ivy walls of the iconic ballpark in the July 30 contest, Mays' forty-nine homers for the 1962 campaign were good enough for his second of four single-season home run crowns, and he'd lose by a razor-thin margin to speedy Dodger Maury Wills in National League MVP voting. The 1962 World Series would provide similar heartbreak, the difference between victory and defeat the trajectory of a single Willie McCovey line drive.

Despite these disappointing near misses, there's no question that the early 1960's found Willie Mays at the peak of his powers, and collectors are properly drawn to material from this period as the ultimate mementos of the sport's top talent. Certainly the rare few gamers issued for Midsummer and Fall Classic play occupy the upper reaches of that hierarchy.

This picture-perfect Hillerich & Bradsby S2 exhibits moderate game use, suggesting it was repurposed for regular season action after the All-Star Game, a common practice in those days. Ball marks and stitch impressions are scattered about the barrel and the uncracked handle is lightly scored, an important Mays trait. At thirty-five inches (35") in length and thirty-three and a half ounces (33.5 oz.) in weight, the lumber is a perfect match to factory ordering records. A black sharpie signature on upper barrel completes the delectable package. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.5. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from SGC Authentic (autograph).
