Includes letter of provenance from fan who caught the ball and had it autographed!

1962 Mickey Mantle Signed Home Run Baseball, MEARS Authentic--Number 25 of MVP Season & 399 of Career. After sharing center stage for a thrilling 1961 season with his teammate and good friend Roger Maris as they chased Babe Ruth's fabled home run record, capping it off with a four-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, it seemed there was nowhere to go but down for the post-war game's most beloved figure. And while a nagging injury limited the Mick's playing time to 121 games, he was absolutely brilliant in that abridged service, leading the American League with a thunderous .605 slugging percentage while playing Gold Glove defense in center field. He'd earn the last of three MVP Awards and seven World Championship rings by the time the book was closed on 1962.

Presented is one of the thirty baseballs he'd deposit into the outfield bleachers during that elite campaign, launched during an August 28th visit by the Cleveland Indians to a soggy House that Ruth Built. The two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning answered Tribe right fielder Al Luplow's solo shot in the top half, proving to be the game-winner as the umpires declared in the middle of the fifth that it was too rainy to proceed.

The OAL (Cronin) sphere is autographed by Mantle (3/10) on the sweet spot and Yankees pitcher Luis Arroyo on a side panel, while another holds the handwritten notation of the delighted fan who caught the ball: "399th H.R., 8-28-62, Mick Won Game 2-1." The included letter of provenance from that fan charmingly recalls the details of catching the ball in the right center field bleachers and presenting it to Arroyo in the bullpen to deliver to Mantle for his autograph as the tarp was pulled onto the diamond. After a considerable wait, the ball was returned to him with the signatures of both Yankees, the thrill of a lifetime for the fifteen-year-old Mantle maniac. Letter of provenance from fan who caught ball. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
