Description

1958 Topps Ted Williams #1 PSA Mint 9 - None Higher. In baseball, you lead off with your best hitter! That must have been the sentiment at Topps as well because for the second consecutive year (and the third time in five years) collectors found Red Sox hero Ted Williams at the front of the gallery on the issue's #1 card. Williams' stoic look and battle-worn cap are familiar features to the many hobbyists who have cherished the '58 Topps set's inimitable style for more than a half-century. Contract maneuvers by Fleer took the Hall of Famer from the gum card giant's line-up by 1959, but Ted's pair of '58s engendered sufficient enjoyment to more than compensate for the loss.

More than 2,800 examples of this treasured portrayal have been validated by PSA, with just nine copies attaining the Mint 9. (None has been graded higher.) We could enter into a lengthy round of superlatives for every point of reference--lethally pointed corners, full measure of original surface gloss, incredibly deep portrait due to precise print registration, etc., etc. Our picture is well worth at least the 1,000 words we spare you. Suitable to grace one of the hobby's finest '58 Topps assemblies! We would like to think even Ted would be impressed by this card.
