Description

1957 Topps Frank Robinson #35 PSA Mint 9. Presented is the rookie card of Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who was hit by pitches 198 times - the ninth highest total in baseball history. That tells you a great deal. Frank Robinson was a right-handed batter who crowded the plate - against right-handers who liked to throw inside, against Gibson, against Drysdale. That shows guts. And stubbornness. Those qualities helped Robinson become the NL Rookie of the Year in 1956 with the Cincinnati Reds. He set a then rookie record of 38 homers. In 1961, Robinson won the NL MVP as he helped take the Reds to the pennant. After being deemed "not a young 30" by the Reds owner Bill DeWitt after the 1965 season, Robinson was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. In 1966, he showed his alleged old age by hitting 49 homers, driving in 122 runs, and hitting .316 to win the Triple Crown and take the AL MVP as he led the Baltimore Orioles to their first ever World Series win. Robinson thus became the first -and still only - player to win the MVP in both leagues. Robinson played most of his career with Cincinnati and Baltimore, and in 1975 he became the first African-American manager in MLB history as he was named the player/manager of the Cleveland Indians. Robinson also managed three other teams.

The 1957 Topps issue was the first time a major card issue showed the now standard 2-1/2" by 3-1/2" dimensions. It was also the first time a full color image was used on the front as opposed to colorized black and white photos. Another first is that the rear of the card has statistics that cover a player's full career. The rear also has a narrative and a cartoon. Graded PSA Mint 9. None have graded higher.
