    Description

A Mint Condition Rookie Card of a Certified Basketball Legend.

1957 Topps Bob Pettit #24 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher. When we think about the all-time greats there is usually talk of natural ability that propels them to the top echelon of their game. For basketball legend Bob Pettit is was pure determination and hard work. That drive, that desire resulted in Pettit becoming the first player in the NBA to top 20,000 points, an All-Star selection for each and every one of his 11 years in the league including All-NBA First Team selection ten of those years, two Most Valuable Player Awards (1956 and 1959), rookie of the year honors in 1954 and an NBA championship in 1957. Not a bad resume for the second pick in the draft who was considered too small in stature and not talented enough to make it in the NBA. At the time, he was highest paid rookie when he signed with the Hawks for the whopping sum of $11,000 and was always in the top ten in scoring year after year. Bill Russell said of Pettit, "Bob made "second effort" a part of the sport's vocabulary. He kept coming at you more than any man in the game. He was always battling for position, fighting you off the boards."

A set of bubblegum cards featuring basketball players had not been made since the one-year effort by Bowman Gum in 1948. Almost a decade later Topps Gum took a chance on the growing sport and produced a now classic set of 80 cards that, by default, features an unprecedented number of rookie debuts with card #24 reserved for Bob Pettit. He is without a doubt among the top three all-time greatest names on the roster next to Russell and Cousey.

Graded PSA Mint 9. This is one of just two cards that have survived the last sixty-one years in seemingly uncirculated condition. There is barely a hint of evidence to say the card has been touched by human hands. As gloss, colors, edges, corners and surfaces all resonate at a level of quality so very few cards achieve. This is a hobby first! We have not found an instance here this card has been offered at public auction with "Mint" in the title. No other example is known at the Gem level. A world-class offering for the most passionate basketball specialist.
