    The Kid goes yard!

1956 Ted Williams Signed Career Home Run #411 Baseball. He sent 521 into the cheap seats during his nineteen seasons of Major League action, but just a small handful of them ever made their way into the collecting hobby. The offered OAL (Harridge) ball was spared an anonymous fate due to the positioning of the visiting bullpen just beyond the right field wall of Fenway Park. It was there that the offered sphere settled into the glove of a Senators pitcher, a solo shot to lead off the top of the ninth inning, and the final run scored in a 9-7 defeat for Williams' visiting Red Sox on August 18, 1956.

A vintage notation on the side panel supplies the key details: "Ted Williams Home Run, Boston Aug. 18th Off Bud Byerly," one of just six long balls allowed by the veteran right-hander during the 1956 season, and the seventeenth of Williams' twenty-four that year. The ball ended up in the personal collection of Senators coach Ellis Clary, and his included letter of provenance validates what we suspect is his handwriting on the ball. A second letter, from our consignor, tells us that he shipped the ball to Williams' home in Florida in the 1990's for signing, gaining a 10/10 blue ballpoint signature during the ball's brief reunion with the superstar slugger. It's one of fewer than ten Williams home run balls to appear on the hobby's major auction block. Letter of provenance from Ellis Clary. Letter of provenance from recipient of Williams signature. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
